August 11 marks National Day for Persons with Physical Disabilities in China. To spread warmth and care for people with disabilities and actively fulfill its social responsibilities, the “Filial Piety Swallows” charity team, together with the “Little Filial Piety Swallows Swallows”, visited Wanzai Kangyuan Center for a heartwarming baking activity. The aroma of freshly baked treats brought a touch of sweetness to this special day.

All ingredients, tools and other supplies needed for the activity were generously donated by the “Filial Piety Swallows” Welfare. From fine flour to smooth red bean paste and rich, savory salted egg yolks, everything was provided to ensure the session ran smoothly. This thoughtful and practical support laid a solid foundation for a meaningful gathering filled with warmth and connection.

Traditional handmade egg yolk pastries involve multiple intricate steps. The instructors at Kangyuan Center took their time, demonstrating each technique and guiding participants step by step. They explained how to fold the pastry dough three times to create flaky layers and how to gently wrap and seal the filling. When the hands-on session began, participants with and without disabilities teamed up and divided into four groups. From weighing ingredients and portioning the dough to rolling, wrapping the filling, and brushing on egg wash, every step was accompanied by gentle conversation and words of encouragement. Though young, the “Little Filial Piety Swallows” team worked with remarkable care and focus. Their little hands moved efficiently and methodically as plump egg yolk pastry rounds gradually took shape beneath their fingertips.

While waiting for the pastries to bake, everyone turned to making fruit pudding together. With gentle unmolding and careful decoration, beautiful peony-shaped puddings blossomed one by one, drawing compliments all around. The “ Little Filial Piety Swallows” team then experienced another part of daily life at Kangyuan Center by helping process gift bags used for Macau souvenirs. Folding, threading cords and arranging the bags, they worked with focused attention despite their initial unfamiliarity with the tasks. Through these hands-on activities, they developed practical skills while learning to appreciate the value of work and the importance of giving to others.
